Watch the path of Andy Roddicks racket. Notice how it is on edge before contact and how it flattens out at the contact point.

Did you know the ball stays on the racket for less than 3 milliseconds?

After contact point you will see the racket face actually faces the opposite way, compared to if he wrapped around the ball.

If you wrap around the side of the ball you will reduce your ability to create spin and therefore hit a really effective serve like Roddick.
